Project Overview
OVERVIEW
Production levels and productivity in Belize’s beekeeping industry are constrained by beekeepers’ and Extension Officers’ limited experience managing Africanised bees, pests and diseases, importation of contraband products of inferior quality into the local market, limited ongoing technical support, aging and decreasing numbers of beekeepers, and access to affordable credit.
Production levels fell drastically over the period 1986-1990 and has remained stagnant. A 2016 survey indicated that the average hive produced 49 lbs. compared to the industry annual average of 66 lbs.; .45% of the beekeepers surveyed had 10 colonies or less, 65% had 20 hives or less, and larger bee-keepers (35 % of those surveyed) depended mostly on honey extraction for their livelihood.
The project provides technical assistance to 75 beekeepers (50% women and youth) and is aimed at increasing rural livelihood options through beekeeping; increasing national production and productivity of beekeeping; and improving the quality of honey, honey byproducts and range of marketable products through the adoption of standards and good operating practices. A demonstration apiary will be established to train industry participants; and beneficiaries will be trained and provided with the equipment and materials for business start-up.
