OVERVIEW

The CARICOM Development Fund has been instrumental in fostering cohesion in Belize by supporting the Government’s initiatives aimed at accelerating sustainable growth. During Cycle 1 (2008-2015) and Cycle 2 (2016-2023), the CDF allocated US$11.6 million to support 13 projects aimed at improving the competitiveness and capacity of SMEs to contribute to inclusive economic growth; and rural communities’ access to safe and reliable water and livelihoods. CDF has supported the creation of a more enabling business and investment climate for all high-potential economic sectors by strengthening the institutional and policy framework; and increasing MSMEs’ access to credit, business support services, and energy management and production technologies.

Planned Results of CDF-Supported projects in Belize
  • Institutional Strengthening:  Enhancing the capacity of 4 key institutions within the local business ecosystem – the Development Finance Corporation (DFC); Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE); Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise; and Ministry of Economic Development.
  • SME Empowerment: Providing 175 MSMEs with increased access to credit to boost innovation, productivity, and competitiveness.
  • Skills Development: Enhancing the skills of 230 beneficiaries in areas relevant to improving the competitiveness of enterprises in high-potential sectors.
  • Technical Assistance: Supporting technology adoption in 155 MSMEs, including 110 honey producers and 36 vegetable farmers.
  • Energy Management: Demonstrating the impact of improved energy management by piloting the adoption of energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions in 5 SMEs.
  • Water and Sanitation: Improving access to safe water for 3,265 rural residents from 4 communities.
