Project Overview
OVERVIEW
The Saint Lucia National Trust was established in 1975, and manages protected sites, promotes environmental sustainability, provides policy advice to government, and adds to the diversity of the local tourism product. It is responsible for the management, development and upkeep of Pigeon Island.
The 18-hectare Pigeon Island is located off the northwestern coast of Saint Lucia and receives in excess of 100,000 visitors annually. The offices of the Trust and operations on the Island depend on the national electricity grid. In keeping with its focus on conservation, the Trust has decided to reduce its carbon footprint and has implemented various measures to reduce energy consumption and increase the use of renewable energy. In March 2020, it commissioned a 12 kWp grid-connected solar PV power generator.
The objectives of the project are to further demonstrate the applicability of photovoltaic electricity in Saint Lucia; reduce the dependence of the Saint Lucia National Trust operations at the Pigeon Island on diesel generated electricity; and promote the use of renewable energy. The project includes the installation of 5 kWp PV panels as an expansion of the existing 12 kWp capacity; replacement of the existing grid-supplied environmental lighting with a lighting system that is solar PV-supplied; and expansion of the lighting coverage to improve security.
