Project Overview
OVERVIEW
The Patience Water Supply System supplies 1,264 households within 10 rural communities - St. Marie, Patience, Lumbard, La Haut, Mon Repos, Wen Development, Mamiku, Praslin, La Pointe, and Malgretoute. It currently consists of a small intake, which gravity feeds a storage facility, where the water is disinfected and subsequently distributed to the public. The System is plagued by high turbidity levels during the rainy season; and because there is no filtration, the quality of water can be poor. There are also extended periods of low volumes of water during the dry season. In those situations, WASCO supplies residents with potable water via water trucks which is costly and very inconvenient to customers. Residential development is also increasing, leading to an increase in daily demand from 60 gallons to 80 gallons of water per person.
The project improves the quality and reliability of the water supplied to the 10 disadvantaged communities, and includes:
• Construction of a rubble-walled intake on the main Fond River, which has a high volume of water even during the dry season. The intake structure will capture the raw water and divert it to the raw water pump station through a raw water trunk main.
• Construction of a pumping station downstream of the intake and installation of appropriate technologies that result in low operation and maintenance costs and implementation of energy efficiency measures.
• Installation of a raw water pumping main to transport water from the pumping station.
• Construction and installation of a water treatment plant with a capacity of 263,963 imperial gallons/day, and adequate to satisfy current water demand of 250,000 imperial gallons/day.
• Installation of a water storage tank to hold treated water and serve as a buffer.
• Training of households and businesses in water conservation practices as well as rainwater harvesting; and installation of smart meters.
