Project Overview
OVERVIEW
The Mirabeau Abbatoir was constructed as part of the Government of Grenada’s (GOGR’s) efforts to improve the social and economic infrastructure in Grenville, a disadvantaged community. The facility has since deteriorated and GOGR has sought technical guidance from the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and financing from the CDF to upgrade the facility and increase its contribution to the development of Grenville.
For the period January to May 2019, Grenada imported 170 small ruminants, 183 cattle, and 238 pigs from St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), which were processed at the Mirabeau Abbatoir. This represented 81% of the cattle rendered at the Abattoir. Grenada’s monthly average import of frozen meat is 219,220 lbs. The plant has an installed capacity for 5 large animals (cattle) or 50 small animals (small ruminants and pigs) per day, which exceeds the number of animals currently being processed throughout the country. This suggests opportunities to increase local and regional trade to meet an increased share of the demand by households and local hostels and restaurants; and reduce extra-regional imports.
The project, joint financed by GOGR, IICA and CDF, provides for:
• Preparation of a plan for the enhancement of the Abbatoir.
• Installation of a waste incinerator and biodigester to improve waste management and disposal.
• Installation of air compressors for the operation of various pneumatic powered machines.
• Replacement/repairs of the compressors for the chillers, and installation of a meat rail.
• Acquisition of mobile chiller units to transport meat.
• The preparation of a Manual and training of staff on Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures.
