Enhancement of Access to Selected Farmlands I /Rural Agricultural Infrastructure Development (RAID) I

Project Overview

OVERVIEW

The Strip is owned and managed by the Frigate Bay Development Corporation (FBDC) and can be traced back to the 1980s. It locates 13 businesses that employ approximately 126 employees (including the 60-room Timothy Beach Resort at the eastern end of The Strip); and has become a popular entertainment spot for locals and visitors. The quality of the product, image and competitiveness of The Strip have, however, deteriorated. There is product fatigue, the rise of competing products, a poor image of safety resulting from late night criminal activity, major beach erosion, and other environmental issues.

South Frigate Bay’s infrastructure has deteriorated, including:
• The poor condition of the road on the landside of The Strip.
• Strong unpleasant odours emanating from the adjacent pond which appears neglected and in danger of losing its fragile eco-system.
• Major beach erosion which has reduced the attractiveness of the area.
• Inadequate lighting and security.

The deterioration of The Strip is in part due to the bureaucratic structure and operations of the FBDC, FBDC’s lack of funds for maintenance, and low digitisation of businesses on The Strip.

The project contributes to the upgrade of The Strip in two Phases:

Phase I: construction of 22,800 sq. ft. of 16 ft. wide road; construction of 4,200 sq. ft. of 8 ft. wide entry board walk; installation of 25 solar street lights; and marshland enhancement and protection.

Phase II: construction of 4 public convenience blocks, a boardwalk, Information Centre and Security Station, and grasscrete parking at entry and exit; installation of 15 solar streetlamps; landscaping; and road paving, construction of sidewalk, and construction of a curb for exit roundabout.
