Project Overview
OVERVIEW
With the closure of the sugar industry, the Government of St Kitts and Nevis (GOSKN) is accelerating efforts at crop diversification.
Programmes have directly benefitted 150 crop and livestock farmers through the supply of inputs and technical assistance. The production of peanuts doubled from 64,000 lbs in 2006 to 128,000 lbs in 2007. The production of cabbage increased by 43% to reach 152,000 lbs in 2007; white potato production increased by 15% to reach 288,000 lbs; and the output of carrots and onions increased by 15%. The production of beef increased from100,000 lbs in 2006 to 135,000 lbs in 2007; and is now meeting the domestic demand for boneless beef, ground beef and beef burgers. Through these programmes, excess production can be exported to regional markets such as St. Maarten and Anguilla. There is, however, a lack of information on export opportunities in neighbouring markets to inform decisions on agriculture sector development
This project finances the conduct of a Market Study in neighbouring islands such as Anguilla, St. Marten, British Virgin Islands, United States Virgin Islands, Antigua, Saba and St Eustatius. The study will enable a ranking of the targeted markets in terms of fit with St Kitts and Nevis’ objectives and capacity; and improved understanding of market entry barriers and the regulatory environment, market demand and trends, and the competitive environment.
